The History of ROGAINE^®

Like many great discoveries, the power of minoxidil to regrow hair came about by chance. Flashback to the 1980s, when scientists discovered that minoxidil, being studied for other indications, actually showed signs of regrowing hair. This finding was a pivotal discovery for millions of Americans experiencing hereditary hair loss.

Taking note, scientists began studying use of topical minoxidil solution on the scalp. Soon, results emerged showing us that topical minoxidil could indeed successfully regrow hair. That started the years of product innovations leading to the multi-generation ROGAINE^® products to provide hair regrowth benefits for both men and women with hereditary hair loss. 1988

ROGAINE^® 2% Minoxidil Solution for Men debuts as a prescription-only solution to hereditary hair loss.

1992

The female version, ROGAINE^® 2% Minoxidil Solution for Women launches.

1996

Both brands become more widely accessible, available over-the-counter at drugstores.

1997

ROGAINE^® 5% Minoxidil Solution for Men, a higher-dose, extra-strength version becomes available.

2006

Johnson & Johnson acquires ROGAINE^® and rapidly developed revolutionary ROGAINE^® 5% Minoxidil Foam for Men.

2011

2014
